Experimental Lighting Design
by Andrea Cavani

Luce Flessibile

Luce Flessibile is a research project by architect Andrea Cavani that began in 2011, exploring the relationship between form, technology, and interaction, starting from an early complex attempt to “bend” light using flexible strips and integrated LED modules.

The project consists of dozens of models, each either a unique prototype or part of a small handcrafted series, in which form, activation, intensity, and color of light result from gestural dynamics of transformation. The development of this previously unpublished research gives rise to the first limited edition productions.

“There is a thrill in these lamps. They are ‘forms’ that light up as if by a breath, with the slightest movement of the hand, almost like magic.”

— Giacomo Cossio, artist and curator

Two spherical lamps, one yellow and one white, hanging from wires on a plain ceiling.

The work stems from a vital impulse: to give contemporary form to light by exploring the potential of new technologies, to respond to a moment of crisis in design and the market through a cultural reflection, and to establish a direct dialogue with the past and with the masters who have inspired the journey.

These include the Modenese architect Cesare Leonardi; the engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, a pioneer in the structural use of reinforced concrete, and Ingo Maurer, whose experimental approach to light opened a more playful and chromatic direction in the research.

Luce Flessibile is available to share its ongoing research through lectures, workshops, and public presentations.

The opportunity is addressed to schools, universities, museums, cultural institutions, and companies, and consists in presenting the lamps and the research process, focused on the flexibility of the elements and the possibility of interacting with them manually.

The aim is to share, in an experiential and workshop-based way, the design process behind each piece. From form to materials, and through technical choices, the lamps are tools for understanding physical phenomena and the relationship between design, production, and use.

General Inquiries

Most of the objects are still in production and remain unseen; the images shown here depict only a few representative pieces.

All lamps are handcrafted in small editions, using durable, recyclable, and eco-conscious or reclaimed materials.
